18 months underway...a few thoughts
No I'm not crying....just wiping sweat away!!
No I'm not crying....just wiping sweat away!!
As we enjoy the extraordinary beauty of Roatan we realize just how fortunate we are to be able to live what has been a lifelong dream. Oddly, as we venture further and further south, we find each new destination provides something individually intriguing. We keep asking the question “how can it get much better”. Of course the answer, as stated many times in the past, is to be able to share this with family and friends (the obvious). You may recall our post from Isla Mujeres (click here to re-read). It was the first layover where it seemed possible to stay indefinitely and, perhaps a “terra firma” target in the future. There have been many stops since Isla which were, in their own way, equally as beautiful though not as “all around” suitable for extended stay. Now, here in Roatan, we find West End, Roatan (Honduras) seems to have it all. Can’t help but wonder what’s coming further along the way. Can it keep getting better….if so how can we stop! Or, should we count our blessings and just accept that there may be endless such places and that we simply can’t see them all. Should we begin our journey back to something more traditionally thought of as home. If so, where is home? Obviously “home” will always be York, PA (fifty five years in one place probably constitutes home, right?). That said; we really don’t plan on spending winters in cold climates any longer. Then there’s Zach and Em. One in York and one in Charleston. “Eeny, meny, miny, moe” just doesn’t cut it! Where do we go? We never really contemplated the need to choose. Our lives, pre cruising, were solidly based on a home base with the entire family close at hand. We know that we were fortunate to share a lifetime with friends and family in such close proximity. Now we’ve joined the contemporary family model and have to ponder such questions.
So there’s the rub. While our journey will continue for some time (completely unknown how much longer at this point) we realize that these questions need be addressed. Some loose game plan seems prudent as we approach two years underway. There’s no “guide book” to help us going forward.
Guess you may detect that we are at an interesting point in the journey. Not extraordinarily difficult but still uncharted waters for us. We are looking at all the possibilities while factoring in the “must do” things (some significant yet routine boat maintenance, upcoming weddings, the inevitable need to pick a place to call home, etc. etc.)
That brings us to today! We are in the early stages of scripting the next phase of our voyage. It’s been awhile since we had need of contemplating such heady decisions. We will forge this path slowly and with much thought. Can’t help but also realize there’s not a better place to do it than in tropical clear waters and on white sand beaches.
Stay tuned…..
