This Sail Canada course will provide the theoretical knowledge required to be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 to 10 meters with an outboard or inboard motor in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. Topics covered will include: Parts of the boat, nautical terminology and commands, safety equipment, navigation lights, hypothermia, cold water shock, carbon monoxide poisoning, the ship’s compass, safe refueling procedures, flares and distress signals, collision regulations, basic weather concepts, responsibilities of the skipper and crew, basic seamanship, dealing with on-board emergencies, knots, basic navigation including charts and tide and current tables. The Sail Canada Basic Cruising exam may be written at the conclusion of the course. A textbook is included in the course fee. A credit of 50% of this course fee will be applied against the Basic Cruising on-water course fee if the on-water is taken with HBSC in 2021
